A guide to wedding dress silhouettes

Silhouette describes the overall line of a dress, rather than every detail of its fit. Use it as a starting point for browsing, and stay open to how different fabrics and constructions feel during a fitting.

A guide to wedding dress silhouettes

A-line: a gradual sweep

An A-line skirt gradually widens from the waist towards the hem. The effect can be quiet and fluid or more structured, depending on the fabric and layers. Compare full-length photographs, then look at the waistline, neckline and train rather than relying on the silhouette name alone.

Ball gown: a fuller skirt

A ball gown pairs a more defined bodice with a full skirt. The volume and weight differ between dresses. At a fitting, discuss how the skirt moves, how you will sit and how the train will be managed. A simple bodice and an embellished bodice can create very different impressions within the same silhouette.

Mermaid and fitted shapes

A mermaid shape follows the body before widening lower down the skirt. Fitted dresses may have a gentler flare or a straighter line. Check where the skirt begins to open, and consider walking and dancing as well as the front, side and back views. Your stylist can explain the differences between individual styles.

Let details refine your shortlist

After choosing a silhouette to explore, compare sleeves, necklines, colour and photographed details. Catalogue photographs and AI previews help you visualise styling; they do not predict sizing or fit. Save the exact dresses you like and ask the boutique which can be viewed for your wedding date.
